Move Preparation and Packing Tips
In general, all loose belongings need to be packed. You have three options: do it yourself, have Jay Rose Services pack everything, or have Jay Rose do partial packing (for example, fragile items only).
Remember, insurance coverage only applies to damage to items inside boxes packed by the moving company, unless it is clear that a box was dropped or mishandled.

Do NOT pack:

  • Money, securities, valuable papers, and jewelry
  • Flammable items such as aerosol cans, paints, and gasoline
  • Perishable items such as frozen foods, produce, and plants
  • Kitchenware or other heavy items with fragile items such as china and dishware

Packing, Sealing, and Labeling Boxes
  • Use small boxes for heavier items and larger boxes for lightweight, bulky items.
  • Wrap small and/or fragile items individually, and stuff the top, bottom, and sides of boxes with paper to help prevent shifting, rubbing, and breakage.
  • Ordinary newspaper will do fine for wrapping purposes, but remember that the print may rub off. For items you want to keep clean, you can buy unprinted newspaper from Jay Rose Services.
  • Pack boxes to the top to prevent them from being crushed, but do not pack fragile items too tightly.
  • Every box needs to be taped, top and bottom, with 2- to 2-1/2-inch gummed or masking tape to give it additional strength and prevent it from opening. You will need one roll of tape for every 15 to 20 boxes. You can buy tape from any hardware store, or for convenience, from Jay Rose Services.
  • Tape the bottom of every box, and tape the top tightly when the box is full — running one strip of tape down the center and two strips on either side. If a box is still not strong enough, apply more tape on the sides.
  • Label the contents of every box and the room where it belongs; group each room together. Also label boxes with your move-in essentials with the title "LOAD LAST” so that these boxes will be unloaded first. Mark moving boxes "FRAGILE" as appropriate.

Packing specific items:

  • Furniture should be wrapped in blankets for its protection. We suggest that you leave this job to the expert movers at Jay Rose. We provide blankets free of charge on local moves.
  • Whenever possible, electronic items (stereos, computers, etc) should be packed in their original cartons. Otherwise, use bubble wrap (available from Jay Rose Services) and pack each item separately in strong moving boxes. Color-code the wiring for easy reinstallation.
  • Remove all CDs and DVDs, and check the instructions to secure the laser.
  • For personal computers, back up important information and "park" the hard disk (program often included on diagnostics diskette). Insert an old or blank disk in the floppy disk drive, if applicable.
  • Use large, double-corrugated boxes for glasses and dishes. Cushion the bottom with rolled or crumpled paper. Wrap each piece individually. Don’t place one layer of dishes directly on top of another; separate them with a layer of paper. "Nest" less expensive glasses and cups in groups of three and wrap the bundle. Cushion along the top sides of the box with paper to prevent shifting. Remember, the steadier the contents, the less chance of damage.
  • Bundle flatware in groups of three and wrap the bundle.
  • Empty dressers completely. Put hanging clothes in wardrobe boxes (available from Jay Rose Services). Use the bottom of the wardrobe boxes for shoes. Put extra tape along the sides.
  • Use picture boxes (available from Jay Rose Services) for framed pictures, paintings, posters, etc. Line the bottom of the box with paper. Place the picture in the box, then stuff the front, back, and top with paper.
  • Remove light bulbs from lamps. Put the lampshade in a separate box marked "FRAGILE."
